September 18 is the Deadline for the First Student SEL Survey
The last day for students to complete the first of three SEL (Social & Emotional Learning) surveys is Friday, September 18. The purpose of this SEL survey is to collect baseline data that will inform each school’s and the district’s work as we continue to support students’ SEL growth and development.
- Surveys are often used to assess thoughts, opinions, and feelings. There are many advantages of surveys; they can provide access to information no other approach can reliably provide.
- This year we are administering three SEL (Social & Emotional Learning) surveys to students in grades 3-5 and 6-12. The first is being administered this week. The next will be administered mid-year; the third survey at the end of the year.
- The purpose of this SEL survey is to collect baseline data that will inform each school’s and the district’s work as we continue to support students’ SEL growth and development.
- Please note that survey data is not comprehensive and is used solely to gauge perceptions among our students regarding how they feel about specific topics.
- In the event you receive questions or concerns about any specific survey item, please refer to the topics below and emphasize to stakeholders that survey data will be used by schools and the district to: gain a better understanding about and build and strengthen students’ relationships with their peers, school staff and other adults students engage with in school as well as to make programmatic decisions; support SEL professional development for staff; etc.
- The surveys are meant to capture students’ feelings about relationships with teachers and other adults they engage with in school. Because some students have shared perceptions both positive and negative about SROs, this first survey captures students’ perceptions about their relationship with them as well. Future surveys will continue to capture perceptions about adults students have relationships with in school including principals, custodians, cafeteria workers, Teaching Assistants (TAs), volunteers, etc.
The survey topics include:
- How learning is going in the remote learning environment
- School culture and climate to include relationships students have with their peers and adults at school
- Additional SEL support students may need
- If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Sherita Cobb, Director of Student Support, at sherita.cobb@orange.k12.nc.us.
- It is important for our students to complete this survey to provide us with feedback regarding their perceptions and experiences to date in OCS and how we can make them better as we continue to focus on their social and emotional needs. In particular, we want to focus on the building-level relationships our students experienced last year with their peers and adults in our schools.
